The Frankenstein of monster sports just gained a new franchise owner: Anheuser-Busch. Major League Pickleball, a cross between tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, has emerged as a legit investment opportunity from its growth in popularity since the pandemic. Joining the ranks of all-star investors like LeBron James and Tom Brady, Anheuser-Busch decided it was better to ‘dink’ with a drink and buy its own team. They saw this popularity pulse as a means to gain brand relevance in the pickleball community (with over 5 million players) with a focus on creating a compelling team identity and culture. In fact, Anheuser-Busch will take care of all aspects of the team, even choosing the players on draft (I mean, that joke just writes itself). It could make sense given that pickleball has been rapidly growing as a sports league, with 200% more Google searches in the last five years and more and more renowned investors.
